Build Your Career in Canada

This session will present job search strategies and  useful tips for newcomers.   Topics will include identifying and overcoming barriers to employment, assessing marketability skills, understanding the Canadian workplace culture , as well as identifying useful resources and services in the community.

Income Tax 101 for Newcomers

Introduction to the Canadian income tax system.  Topics include why we need to fill out the forms, an explanation of the various forms, what documents we need to have when preparing our taxes, and the differences bewteen the individual versus the business taxes. 

Aimed at newcomers but those persons needing a refresher  are welcome to attend.   [Please note this session does not include the process of  filling out of the forms].

Introduction to Computers for Live-in Caregivers

Hands-on workshops to help live-in caregivers improve or develop their computer literacy skills.
Basic instruction includes typing, internet browsing, email, excel, and power point.
Library tour can also be arranged.

ESL Family Sessions

This unique program is for both newcomer parents and their school age children (grade 1-grade 6).  Newcomers will attend 6 weekly sessions to enhance their public speaking skills, which will in turn help them improve their job prospects in Canada. 
 In an adjoining room, their children will receive homework help for math, reading and writing.  This is also a wonderful opportunity to experience all that the White Oaks library has to offer!

Immigration and Citizenship Information Session

Learn about new regulations, policies and procedures related to immigrating to Canada.  
Find out about the new Super Visa, sponsoring a family member, extending a work  or study visa, how to become a permanent resident, and how the provincial nominee program works.

Canadian Citizenship Test Preparation

Assistance is available for filling out citizenship application forms and checking the status of applications.   Get help preparing and practicing for the Canadian citizenship test.

Settlement Services for Newcomers to Canada

A eettlement worker  is available  at the Glen Abbey Branch Library every Monday to help newcomers settle in Oakville.  

The settlement worker can provide information on employment, education, housing, healthcare , citizenship and immigration forms.  

Customers are welcome to drop-in with their inquiries.  Appointments can also be made for a specific time by calling 905-842-2486 ext 223. 

Free.     Ongoing every Monday 4:00pm- 8:30 pm
